Back to the original question: How much to budget?

My advice is $3000 to $4000.

The big variable is beer and towns. Hiking the AT is basically free. It’s the towns where you spend your money. Those people that take time off in towns are going to spend a lot more than those that get in and get out.

Myself, I spent a lot less than the average. But, it was my choice to hike the AT rather than see small town America.

It’s a great adventure. Make sure you can afford to have the kind of adventure you want to.

My original post on maildrop/resupply ideas can still be found at Trailquest (www.trailquest.net/atresupply.html)

It should also be found, with additional revisions for 2003, on the WhiteBlaze site (www.whiteblaze.net). However, I only just sent them the revisions a few hours ago, it may not be posted just yet, but probably will be by the end of the day.

Oh. Back to the original question: I generally spend around 3,000 bucks, but I probably spend more time and money in town than most folks, as I’ve been known to enjoy the occasional drink or cigarette. It is certainly possible to have a fine trip for $2500.00 or so, but whatever you budget, I’d plan on socking away an extra 15-20% just in case you misjudge your expenses, have unplanned gear or health problems, etc.
