There’s another spot on the trail you may have heard about. The “Roller Coaster” section is just south of Bears Den Hostel in northern Virginia. The Roller Coaster, itself, is some hard hiking. But the reason it exists is because of a government facility close by - Mount Weather.
Mt. Weather was built during the Cold War. At ground level there are a number of buildings, satellite dishes, etc. But underneath, dug through rock 80-100 feet down, is the equivalent of a small town. This is the place that the Executive Branch (President & Vice President) would be taken if there was a nuclear war. These days the surface facility is run by FEMA (remember their boss in the New Orleans hurricane?). If you want more info, do a Google search.
The Appalachian Trail used to run along the ridgeline. When Mount Weather was built, the trail was re-routed to it’s present day location - the Roller Coaster.
