Yup.Maybe, just maybe this fall. You had damn good times. Got me beat.
Lone Wolf
MOST goliters have their shit together and you’re one of them. The others ARE out there.
Lone Wolf
If you need a ride to the race and any kind of support person, I would be willing to help you out.
Pushing Up Daisies
lonewolf-
thanks for the positive comment! there are going to be moochers and tools out there regarsless of their hiking styles.
i think it’s hilarious to think you can rely on others while on the trail. i have never been on the AT, only the CT, but since i didn’t run into many people, you gotta be completely self sufficient or your screwed!

The purpose of the trail was not to hold commericalized races on. Maybe when segway’s come out, they can hold commericalized races as well.
And Lone Wolf, don’t lie or assume and say you know the trail better than other people or myself. You probably don’t nor do you know about my experience in the area. I see you have issues to deal with mentally about your ego.
schikerbiker
Calling people full of s–t? ANd claim to be a person of peace and tolerance. It’s hypocrites like you who damage hiking reputations with such name calling. Someone disagrees with you and out comes the name calling and profanities. Grow up and get the hatred out of your heart. It’s people like you that make me enjoy hiking away from others.
schikerbiker
my ego is small. i’m willing to bet i DO know more than you about the AT. have you thru-hiked? what IS your experience in the area mentioned? and how about all that damage runners do? i ain’t lying or assuming. waiting for your answers.
Lone Wolf
hahaha! answer the questions. if my ego were big i’d write books and guides and have patches and certificates like all the other egotist elitists. I’m just blue-blazin hiker trash.:nerd
Lone Wolf
Lonewolf, maybe you’d be interested in running in the race I’m trying to put together:
http://www.unc.edu/~mkirk/sauratown.html
Pushing up Daisies, thanks for the offer! When is that race? I will be running my first 100-mile this April at Umstead. We’ll see how it goes!
Schikerbiker, you’re right, we need to get the hatred out of our hearts. Sometimes it would all be best if we simmer down! You’re also right that the trails were not built for commercialized races, they were built for outdoor recreation- and those designated for foot traffic only were built for hikers… and runners.
You can also rest assured that your wish is fulfilled, the ATC has permitted only one ultramarathon on the AT and that is the JFK. So for one day out 365, 8 miles of 2165 miles of AT will see a mass of numbered runners. So… simmer down, because those organized races you “hate” are very rare actually. Peace
Sweeper
That would be very cool, I’ll hang on to your email and will probably see you at trail days the week before. Later.
Sweeper
Peace and tolerance, me. You got the wrong guy, Mr. Biker, I’ve never claimed that.
Excuse me, I have to go run on the trail.
Blue Jay
How does the race impact the trail? Aid stations being set up off the trail, spectators being off the trail to watch it, hikers being forced off the trail because of the runners, the damage exerted by the extra pounds per square inch and the many runners that ignore the trail and use shortcuts. And don’t lie and say that isn’t the case, I’ve seen it with my own eyes. All of the above is true. Of course since you claim to particapate in such things, you’re interest is self-serving and not in the interest of the trail. The race should perhaps be held on the much less used and publicized, Tuscarora trail out by Hancock.
However for your ego, you really need mental counciling, denial is a sign of being ill. And the only reason the ATC approves of the JFK run is the mega bucks they donate to the ATC. 8 miles is too much, even once a year. And it certainly wasn’t what the planners of the AT had in mind when they designed the trail.
Anyhow, until you get more stable, I will not be responding to you.

aid stations for the JFK are at roads. nice try. i’m checkin in this afternoon at the loonie bin with nurse Rachet. why are you so angry? and did you send me that accusatory e-mail? shame on you if you did.

<<Aid stations being set up off the trail, spectators being off the trail to watch it>>
You’re right Schikerbiker, aid stations are set up OFF the trail, on paved parking lots and trailheads in fact. they don’t set up stations in the woods on the trail or on sloping mountain sides on the trail because of the inconvenence for operating such stations. And spectators congregate at the aid stations OFF the trail on these paved parking lots and shoulders. Thus, the stations and specatators don’t cause any more damage to the trail than say a car parked at a trailhead parking area. Do you ever park a car at a trailhead when you go for a hike?
<>
You’re right again, the hikers step aside, but it is usually a courtesy exchanged not only between hikers and runners, but hikers and hikers. Have you ever stepped aside to let another hiker pass?
<>
I don’t believe this. An individual hiking with backpack weighs more than that individual running because of the extra gear he/she carries. Also the damage inflicted by the poles and lugs in the boots must be taken into account as well with the larger number of footstrikes made because of a smaller stride. Banning the runners because of the damage exerted by “extra pounds per square inch” probably means we should ban backpackers as well.
<>
I’ve seen just about as many runners taking shortcuts on a trail as I have hikers.
<>
This is not true, the ATC does not rely on money generated from this race. Rather, they allow it because of it’s long history and a tradition of being relatively low-impact.

heck lonewolf, I don’t mind sharing if someone is low… it is when they don’t carry it PERIOD that I get alittle ticked. I agree with trying to go lite. It definitlely ( for me ) made a huge difference on the PCT. I never was over 30… even carrying my dogs’ food. Hey, she is my bestest bud… would do anything for her… We saw lots of folks WAY liter then us. The thing about going ultra lite is ( seems to me ) you are’nt prepared for what could go wrong. saw that quite a bit… Weather can change, can get lost… need more food then you thought ect etc. We did thru hike in sneakers and they worked FANTASTIC. I was amazed !!!.. and my feet were thrilled… not nearly they aches and pains of the AT. Then again, not nearly the rocks as the " older sister " of them all. The true beauty of distance hiking ( for me ) is that there is’nt a rule book. Hke your own hike as they say… oh yeah… why are folks picking on the Wolfer ?? I don’t know ya but ya seem nice to me !..
Yappy… now ya know how I got my name… kinda windy ain’t I ?..
