I saw two out of the orindary (for me) creatures -

I saw 2 young 5 striped skinks. The are black with yellowish stripes going horizontal along their body and the young ones have a bright blue tail. I saw these in VA.

The second interesting thing was a luna moth. It was glow in the dark green and about the size of my hand. It was hanging out on the side of a tree in PA.

Pictures of both are on my website - www.trailjournals.com/sarahw

We have a lot of foxes around East Tennesse… grey foxes and red… so I thought I was familiar with them. Last year I was near the Blackburn Center outside of Harper’s Ferry and saw 2 animals that I still am not sure if they were foxes. They were small, short haired and a solid tan color… no markings at all. They had long smooth tails and big rounded ears. While I think they were canine, I don’t think they were just dogs. What do you think I saw?

My last night in Mass. I saw a bug that resembled a pinecone. It was brown with a scaley shell, and even had a tail that stuck up. The critter was about 3 inches long and walked pretty slowly. It was very wierd, cool, and I wanted to wake up the two SOBO’s to show them, but I think I already freaked them out with my late arrival and stinky smell.

Anyone know if it’s true that there are supposed to be red wolves in the smokies?

They released several pairs in Cades Cove in the southwestern Smokies, the last I heard was they all died of canine illnesses.

I saw a mountain lion near the Dicks dome shelter in Va. Several other hikers also saw a mountain lion in this area which leads me to believe it was an escaped pet rather than an indigenous animal. Large cats are generally very stealthy and there were to many sightings in an area with out a large population of these creatures for me to believe that this was a wild animal.
