Now you know why the ATC prints the maps and guidebook, if you want the best shot of figuring out where you are, they, along with an altimeter watch and an understanding of your hiking pace uphill, level ground and downhill. Everyone seems to disagree with the profile maps, and I did too, until the altimeter watch I got proved them correct for the most part. When I do the thru, I plan only to take the sections of the guidebook I need. This is only a personal preference, cause I like to read the stuff in the guidebook along the way as I pass the stuff on the trail. Others dont care about what they will encounter along the way between towns, and for them, the data book is plenty sufficient. It is certainly possible to hike the whole thing, as best I can tell from the southern 610miles I have done, without using any books at all if you are willing to be flexible enough and dont mind an occaisional trip down the wrong path for a half mile or so till you realize you are on some unblazed side trail. It sounds as though Zammy thought he/she were buying the guidebook/map but ended up with the Databook. I bet if he/she had the guidebook/map, all would be right with the hike.
