Stop beating the guy down!Considering the U.S. is basically the only country in the world that measures dist. in miles it is reasonable to say that he is having trouble. If you went to Europe and hiked using guidebooks measured in kilo. having never done before you wouldn’t think it was so funny.Stop makeing fun of him like a bunch of 2 year olds.

Zammy -
I didn’t tell you to go home, I told you to learn to read a map so you can find what you’re looking for. The same comment applies to everyone on the trail - any trail. There are those who never use maps or guidebooks on the AT - they don’t know where they’re going, have no idea where they’re at and don’t have a clue where they’ve been. They’re lost - by their own choice - and they deserve their irritation.

The Data Book - is NOT - repeat NOT NOT NOT - a guide book. It was never meant to be, it’s neither advertised nor sold as such and if you’re using it as one then “YOU” are the one who’s misusing it so quitcher complaining and fix “YOUR” problem. If you want to “enjoy” the trail, then learn the skills that’ll allow you to enjoy it. It ain’t a free ride.

i jump too quickly to smart ass replys. perhaps its from being born and raised in beantown. jack, you are right. zammy, my apologies, i certainly have had my fair share of irritation on this trail. still, condsider what i said about hiking at dusk and keeping track of your pace, since it is my opinion that every publication is flawed, that we need to take the info as a general guideline. perhaps though you are the type of hiker who would benefit from multiple publications at once. myself, i rock the data book alone because i like to be surprised. at any rate, as the hike progresses you will work out these kinks.

again, sorry for being a smart-ass. good luck and happy hiking.

Now you know why the ATC prints the maps and guidebook, if you want the best shot of figuring out where you are, they, along with an altimeter watch and an understanding of your hiking pace uphill, level ground and downhill. Everyone seems to disagree with the profile maps, and I did too, until the altimeter watch I got proved them correct for the most part. When I do the thru, I plan only to take the sections of the guidebook I need. This is only a personal preference, cause I like to read the stuff in the guidebook along the way as I pass the stuff on the trail. Others dont care about what they will encounter along the way between towns, and for them, the data book is plenty sufficient. It is certainly possible to hike the whole thing, as best I can tell from the southern 610miles I have done, without using any books at all if you are willing to be flexible enough and dont mind an occaisional trip down the wrong path for a half mile or so till you realize you are on some unblazed side trail. It sounds as though Zammy thought he/she were buying the guidebook/map but ended up with the Databook. I bet if he/she had the guidebook/map, all would be right with the hike.

Hey Milo, Good for you to be able to admit when you are wrong and actually post it for all to see. Kudos…!

Zammy, just keep on keeping on for the adventure of your life. There are plenty of people on the trail who will very happy to help you figure things out.

:tongue :tongue

It’s all good Zammy. It doesn’t matter where you are hiking data books, guide books and the such are never correct down to the last inch. ALWAYS go with a detailed map; much more trustworthy. I don’t think that is being egocentric, just trying to help you a bit.

I don’t understand anymore. What are you talking about? I never had a clue. I don’t even want to know. Like I said before all problems on the trail are from EGO’s or vanities. Even the vanity of not admiting it. But if that is you then be yourself, but your on a trip to back home. I don’t think this is your true soul, your stressed out with vanities, from ignorance. I’m just a simple man, no more quests for Gold, but I’m happy. Love the A-T and all 3 LDT and America to. But don’t care about How mammy Jammin in my Lexus staying Trump plaza. Even for free. What to hike with the bugs instead and the bad maps and all the things that make me come alive. Take what you need from this, its me not you so I try to help. This site helps me to understand some of my problems to. I say something and you’s argue with me and you know I love to learn natures way, even if you got some wrong way to make it right. Life is still fun and games.

Ahh, I understand the rest of you. See, I can talk better than type. But like Zammy what ever, I will master this writing skill myself, for my composer to.

Wingnut cracked it this year. Screw the Databook. The companion is good for shelter descriptions and town info, crap for anything else. Wingnuts book gave everything but shelter descriptions, go and buy it and burn the data book.
