Just called Yosemite permits an hour ago–They were issuing permits for entry on Aug 8, 2004 today (2/16). I was told that I could apply for my permit for entry on 8/21 on Monday, 3/8.

Durn, I better get on the stick if I want to apply for mid-August. I ordered guidebooks yesterday, but they will take awhile to arrive.

Do you have a number to call? What specifically does one ask for? If I have to name specific campsights, I wouldn’t know what to name at this point.

It’s really happening. When you order the guidebook, something turns inside, the hike leaves Idea-land or Wish-land and becomes a “thing” to write in on the calendar. Now I am getting set to order a permit next week!

Skeemer, Mule, Leif, are you following this? We need to wake up and get off our duffels.

Please note that reservations can be made no earlier than 24 weeks in advance of your entry date.

Okay Lef, math isn’t my strong suit, but by my count 24 weeks is 6 months, and for a mid-August start (ie, six months from now) the application date is… now. Right here, right now. What am I missing?

That’s about right… need to apply early to mid-march for a late August early September start.

Look above… Just Sit said he called, “They were issuing permits for entry on Aug 8, 2004 today (2/16). I was told that I could apply for my permit for entry on 8/21 on Monday, 3/8.”

It’s possible that you could get a ride to Kennedy Meadows (PCT, several days south of Whitney) and hike north as a PCT section hiker. I say that because we hiked the whole JMT into Yosemite while along the PCT (including side trips up Whitney and down into Yos. Valley) and nobody ever hassles us, and it was free to go into Yos. from the backcountry, AND Yos. is a great place to finish! Killer AYCE in the Valley! Plus you get to see more of the High Sierras that way.

My bro and I are going southbound, probably starting in Tuolumne – we’ve done the Valley to Tuolumne section a couple times each and we’d rather bring ropes and rack and climb Cathedral Peak during the day we have to spend waiting for the permit to clear than backpack it again.

Our expected start date July 6, although I must admit that all of the snow that’s been blasting the Sierras has me a tad nervous about starting that early. My buddy hit Donahue Pass on July 2 a couple of years ago and had to walk through knee deep snow, and Mammoth’s already received more snow this year than they did in the entire 2002 season … we’ll see, I guess.
