Losing weight on AT

#21

I hiked 920 mi in 2001, and the rest in 2003. I weighed abt 285 when I started both times and lost abt 65 lbs both times…gained it all back both times…everyone seems to.
rule of thumb that I heard ws that men lose muscle mass and women lose fat.
the problem is that its HARD to carry, much less eat 5000 cal/day so everyone binges in town and goes back into starvation mode on the trail. I have heard of a few men who gained weight bt not much. most folks only eat about 2500-3500 cals/day while burning 4000-UP got to where I carried a loaf of bread, a lb of cheese and a lb of lunchmeat out of EVERY town/convenience store..dont need to worry abt it going bad,as it will be gone in 2-3 days. then you cn go to dried stuff and tuna

…add some stairs or climbing exercises to your walking prep - it made a world of difference between my first and second hikes.
