What better way to pass a rainy day than to watch movies. So I’d like to try and make a list of all the movies that have been filmed on the AT.
These are the only ones I know of so far:
Blair Witch Project
Nell

Good question! Try going to www.imdb.com…the best movie website. In the search block try “trail”, try “applachian”, or whatever you want. You can spend lots of time clicking one link after another. There’s even a filter in the search for just the word involving plots, characters, etc. And then when you do click on a movie at some point on the left hand side down towards the bottom if the words “filming locations” is blue you can click on that too. The possibilities are endless it seems with finding movie information. I periodically check it for any kind of movie or documentary involving hiking, trails, etc.

Blip, add “The Winter People” starring Kurt Russel. A barn-like shelter located in North Carolina was used in the movie. Good movie!

Blip. When you get your list, post it for all the people that are too lazy to do it themselves. Thanks, I think I’ll go lay down for awhile and see what’s on TMC.

Blip, I think the name of the shelter used in “The Winter People” is OVERMOUNTAIN SHELTER, located near Roan Mountain, Tennessee.

wasn’t Nell, with Jody Foster, filmed in Fontana dam ?I also think Last of the Mohicans and Cold Mnt were close. I know that alot of Cold M was out of the country but some ( I think ) was in NC…

Hi Blip,
Loved your question and am looking forward to hearing of more movies filled on the AT. “Last of the Mohicans” was filmed in NC, but at Chimney Rock Park - or at least a good part of it. I went to Chimney Rock Park a couple of years ago and remind Strider everytime we watch the video that “I’ve been there.” Chimney Park is between Charlotte and the Blue Ridge and Great Smokeys area. I think “Nell” was filmed around the Robbinsville area - near Fontana Dam. Keep in touch.

Ah yes, movies; love 'em. How about Dirty Dancing - filmed in Roanoke, Virginia area. While filming, Patrick Swayze stayed in room 232 at the Mountain Lake Resort. I tried to get the adjoining room 231 but it was taken. :lol

Parts of the Last of the Mohicans was filmed on the Nolichucky River in the gorge which is very near the section of the trail going north out of Erwin. My copy was played to death by dozens of hikers. Supposedly there is a brief glimpse of a white blaze in a scene where a guy is running through the forrest. I think there is a white blaze in the Blair Witch Project, too.
Miss Janet
Chimney Rock Park is very close to Lake Lure. The creek running thru the community/towns, is super for rock hopping, swimming etc… Bat Cave to Lake lure has many places to stay right on the creek. Hotels and camping.
A little touristy but worth it. Chimney Rock Park is a good day trip with clif-side hiking and super views.
Deliverance was filmed on the Chattogga River. This area has super hiking and fishing available.
The Foothills Trail from the fish hatchery to the lick log area follows along the river with good falls and the best continuous views in the southeast.(when the leaves are off) Takes 2-3 days. Its not quite as strenuous as the Ga AT but in places you get your fill with ups. If you want to hike this area read the journals of the Foothills trail on this site.
:cheers

Blip,
great topic… but why have you not finished your 04 journal???
hey Peep,
the Dirty Dancing movie was filmed at the Mountain Lake Resort. It is located in Pearisburg.
Switchback 03
Thanks for the correction Switchback - and my source was a blog from Virginia! And perhaps part of the movie was filmed in different areas around Virginia. And perhaps everyone wants to get credit.

“The People Under The Stairs”
Hey there Blip…heard LM say you guys and Viking hiked a wee bit.
Jolly good.
Lion King
I was hoping to get more, but I will check out that website Allyson mentioned to try and find more. So far this is what was suggested:
Blair Witch Project, Nell, Dirty Dancing, The Winter People, Last of the Mohicans, Deliverance, People Under the Stairs, Cold Mountain - not all where filmed on the AT, but many are within a stones throw!
On a different note - did anyone see The Village? I know it was dissappointing as a thriller, but I have to say it was incredibly creative and a good original idea.

2000 Miles to Maine Filmed exclusively on the AT, available on Amazon and on the website clickable above. Though not yet listed on the IMDB, should be in a week or two.
Feedback about the movie is here

Unfortunally the Winter People movie did not use the overmountain shelter in the movie. They came there to film and even built a cabin beside of it that would have been used. But no filming was ever done. All the actors showed up the day before me and my brother hiked out there for a new years trip. We got to stay there over night with the guard that was watching over the place. But the site didnt get the snow that they wanted and they packed up and left. But it was supposed to be used.

Oh, good, Ms Janet. Now I have an excuse to watch it one more time. There is something in it that captures the essence of life outdoors. Love it.
