Wookie said that some of these responces were rank with envy! This is a forums to state what ever, how we feel about anything, if its Nagative, Positive, so be it, we all have a voice on any matter and should let it all out at any time, In this Country we will not be shot for doing so, weather we are Positive with a guy running from Georgia to Main, or nagative for his use of the A.T. for such a record, As far as Envy, I did not detect any at all, and would not support Trail Bikes, or Trail running the A.T. As far as the record, just about anybody thats in shape and with support could do the same thing without a PACK, nothing special done here! You just have to want to run from Georgia to Main

Fly,

Nobody's shooting anybody for stating their opinions here. Say what you want, I'll say what I want. That's how it works.

....you have no idea what you're talking about, so I'll leave it there.

Andy is a bad MF for breaking the record, for doing the trail period, and for being a great guy in general.

Way to go Trail Dawg!

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH,
So much effort into a subject and most of the ones that want to put a intelligent spin on the whole subject just bored me to death and missed the point.
I always thought that hiking was what YOU as an individual wanted it to be, and it has many levels on what that individuality to YOU is.

There are some parts of the trail i wish i could have run, mainly the parts without a good view.

You can move fast and still appreciate the trail, just not in the same way, thats all. If the guy slack packed between gaps I’m sure he had a whale of a time, slack packing rules!

The one term that repeatedly surfaces in this forum is HYOH. So when one guy does it faster than anyone else, ya’ll find it necessary to analyze it like it was a new discovery of an alternative to the theory of relativity or something equally profound.

I’m a Sierra hiker. One of the things i could never understand was the fact that many PCT and JMT thruhikers blow through the Bighorn Plateau - probably the most spectacular scenary anywhere - without stopping for at least a few minutes.

But if that’s their idea of a successful hike - so be it. Maybe mile per day satisfaction in their minds equals the pleasure of any kind of contemplative wilderness experience.

But it’s still their hike.

“One man’s out running the AT, spending money on himself, proving something to himself while people starve to death. That makes no sense.”

Hey Halabalaja, you must be very careful when you choose to be judgemental. “Spending money on himself”–can we assume that you never spend money on yourself? Can you honestly look in the mirror and know beyond a doubt that you have never spent money on anything that was not truly necessary? I think you need to get off your hypocritical soap box.

In a society where we worship professional athletes, in paying them millions upon millions of dollars to play sports, I find it much easier to praise someone like TrailDawg, who did this humbly and without very much recognition.

It all goes back to everyone must hike their own hike…

The main problem I see here is a misunderstanding of the word selfishnes. Many of you seem to think it is every through hikers responsibility to help others. As if taking a little self interest were a bad thing and the only good thing a person can do is give away free money to people who could never appreciate, or understand the amount of blood, sweat and tears that went into making it in the first place. I give my kudos to the record setter. And I pose a question. If happiness were a single ball, and a single person could not hang onto it for fear of being selfish, but instead had to continuelly pass it on to the next person, of what use is happiness? many seem to think it is my responsibility to live for my neighbor, instead of, “god forbid”!!! doing something for yourself. I’m sorry if I insult anyone but it all seems pretty foolish to me. If giving away your money is what makes you happy then good for you. But if you like your money and wish to use it for your own self interest good for you as well.
