It depends on what kind of stakes you use and what the soil is like. Basically stakes are either spikes or some shape to create more resistance. Some are very thin spikes, and these work well in clay-type soil or ground with lots of roots. Other stakes are V-shaped or U-shaped, and they work well in sand and snow.

It also depends on your tent. Some require very tight pitch to remain water repellent (eg, single-wall designs). This put a lot of stress on the stake. Others are waterproof without the pitch, so you don’t have to put as much stress on the stake. In that case it wouldn’t matter as much.

If you’re concerned about soft ground, take an appropriate stake for an extra ounce or two. Or just find a tree to tie off to, or stuff rocks into a sack, or tie onto a big stick, or…
