The Low Down on Clothing for a Through Hike

I never imagined that gearing up for the AT would be so much work. It seems that when i think i have my gearlist down, i read some a new post that changes my mind. I’m kind of cut on this hole “lite packing” thing. Just hope i don’t go out there too empty handed. It’s a good think i started the planning with a year to go. Thanks for all the feedback. It really helps put things into prospective.

Just to add my 2 cents worth. I found the perfect sock liner for me this year. It’s a nylon/spandex trouser sock in the women’s section at Walmart. 2 pair for $1.96. The large size fit well. Ultralight too. I converted several other hikers also and they all thought they were great. I’ve never had much trouble with blisters wearing Vasque boots and sock liners and 1 pr of decent hiking socks.

Bigfoot, Flame is cold natured and was concerned about her clothes. We started hiking around the neigborhood in December before our hike. Every day it snowed, rained, or was below freezing in the morning, we headed out. She learned how to layer and what worked for her and what didn’t. By the time we got to Springer she had a great deal of confidence in her clothes selection. I would say the majority of people we met early on in our hike had never used the gear they were packing (including the pack). You cannot imagine the amount mailed back at Neels Gap. Some people ship back almost half of what they started with 30 miles back. This process continues in NC, TN and VA. If you hike in your neighborhood your neighbors may want to call the men in the white suits but you will have more confidence in your gear. Start with the least amount of gear and add as needed it will hold down your expense. Good luck on your hike.

Living in Miami makes it difficult for me to judge what winter gear i will need. The coldest it gets down here is 50 degrees, for about a week a year. As far as heat and rain, i know exactly what to expect. Maybe i’ll try to go up north around Nov or Dec, and try some cold weather hiking for a week or so. Thanks for the advice.

I carried 2 sets of long wicking underwear, REI MTS brand, The whole trip, one for hiking and the one strictly for sleeping. I sent my bag home at Pearisburg and had only a polartec blanket, so i slept in long undies all the time. and they help reduce bug bites while sitting around before bed.
