Hi, about the bear canister, I’m from the UK so i was thinking of buying a bear vault and getting it shipped to kennedy meadows as part of the PCT offer (Will KM charge me for holding my bear vault?)

At the moment, the plan for the first few resupplies is:

Aqua dulce (mile 450)

Techapis/ mojave (550)

Lake isabella via onyx (mile 650)

Kennedy meadows: pick up my bear vault and post a mail drop from Aqua Dulce and pick it up here (700)

Independence (800)

Mammoth lakes (900)

I don’t really have a plan for after that as it seems easier to resupply once through the sierras and I’ll improvise as I go along.

So the plan is: lan in LA second week of june, start at Aqua Dulce and head north. Fly out of seattle early sept, so hopefully i"m in the washington area…who knows, I might even see monument 78! :open_mouth:

Two quick questions:

Is it possible to access lone pine without a whitney permit? (not sure if I have 60 days to wait for a permit)

Is it possible to climb whitney without a permit? (please give details…I’ve ehard it’s possible.)

Lastly, If I absolutely must have a whitney permit to climb it, can I email my permit application form to someone so they can fax it for me? International mail will take too long (if it’s faxed apr 30th hopefully I can say i’m gonna be at whitney july 1st and I should get the permit)

This forum is a great place, answered all my questions on the PCT. At first I thought the PCT was too inaccessible to a newb, but I’m glad I perservered…might be even gladder once I’ve actually reached the trail! :stuck_out_tongue:

of course, JMT & PCT hikers do it all the time… from the West side, instead of the Lone Pine side… I wisht I woulda done it at the time, but I thought I would soon be back for peak bagging purposes when I was thru hiking the PCT. From Kennedy Meadows or Tuolumne Meadows or some other valley up besides the permitted Eastern Portal, do an end run around Whitney & do it the easy way, up the West side!!

I started May 22 & it was not that much of a problem!
I did have to carry an abundance of water, but in the summer heat, you ain’t that hungry at start of trail so don’t have to carry that much food! I did get 100 ticks crawling up my legs on the ridge just before the 3 points & the Mojave, so be prepared to feed them to the ants for revenge! At least for you, the snow may be less on Mt. San Jacinto & Baden Powell; but be prepared for fires in the forest N of LA. Actually, the later you arrive at the JMT the better… you just have to hike the Mojave at night, or at least very early morning!!!
