“i dont undersand why people say to take more time.”
Luke you will understand by the end of your hike.
Leslie my hike was a vacation and not based on some distorted philosophy as you call it. I know that may be me taking what you said out of context but you either thru-hike to get to the other end or you do it to stay in the middle as long as you can. A lot of us wish for the latter.
Two Scoops
If you really enjoy hiking, camping, the trail community, etc. then you want to stretch it out as long as you can. Why go home to get a job when I can be enjoying myself on the trail? Right here on the trail is exactly where I want to be, nowhere else, so I’ll take my time. That is my attitude.
OTOH, if you hate hiking, camping etc. then you want to finish as quickly as possible. There are a fair number of people on the trail who really don’t enjoy hiking but they want the title of thruhiker, so their eye is only on Katahdin, not on the trail in between.
Luke, if you discover that you really enjoy the life of a long distance hiker, you may understand why some folks want to prolong the journey. Or you may not.
