“Howie” at the Happy Hiker Outfitters in Gatlinburg says that Bono & Rocket left their store about 30 minutes ago and were heading on up the Trail. Conditions are 3 - 5 feet of snow, with temps dropping to 0 tonite. He said they looked well-prepared and looked good - and he felt they would be okay.

If they only had Feathered Friends down jacket. Sounds like some good snow for building an nice cave. No mice there and a lot warmer.

I am glad to hear all is well.

Grizz, I can’t make it to the Mtns anytime soon but maybe we could go hit some trails over the summer. Or maybe mid March. I am going to need a partner to hit to Smokes around March 17th or so. Im gonna go hike along with some Thru Hikers while some hit the Smokes. You outta come along. I plan on going from Fontana to Davenport. E-mail me at jcdeane@usa.com for more info.

Just happened upon this discourse about Bono and Rocket - so glad to see the support and concern! Thanks. I’m a good friend of Bono’s; following his journal with much interest.

Last time I was in Gatlinburg, women were out tanning front down, with straps un-attached and it was snowing in Chicago.

What I would have gave for a nice snowball to land on a few of those womens backs.

Hey guys,

as I sit here and read this I am a little humbled and deeply appreciative of your concern. To anyone who is thinking of hiking the AT, this is what the gang at Trailjournals and the Hiker community at large is about. They WILL beat you down in a minute if you stick your head up the wrong way, but everyone of them would drop their pack and hike 35 miles out for help for you, regardless of who you are.

Thanks Guys, you are the best!

Here is what really happened.

Yes it was brutally cold!
Yes the snow was 4 feet deep much of the way!
Yes my limits were tested!
Yes I woke everymorning to put damp socks into blocks of ice for boots!
Yes I was concerned every minute I was up there.
Yes it was extreme and pushed the boundries of the safe and sane.

Yes it was the coolest thing I have ever done.
Yes I would do it again (more snow and colder)

The Smokies was somthing I hoped and prayed for and I was never in fear and I am a better hiker for it.

Hey there everyone-
This is Rocket. I am glad that you all are concerned with our safety. Thanks for caring.

Bushwhack- I have a small bone to pick. What in the world does and I quote..."but with Rocket on his back it might be a long trip."
Man, everything I have heard about you from Bono has been good... But can you PLEASE explain what this little comment means. Thanks.

Peace
Rocket
