WHY HIKE? - Appalachian Trail

Why hike? Darned if I know. I do my sections. It’s a goal. I’m not a thruhiker, nor do I ever plan to be one. Section hiking is crazy enough for me. I followed the trail to the Water Gap, and sorta kept going. Next thing I knew I was halfway across Pennsylvania. And there I was on top of Killington, Vermont. I don’t do those twenty-mile days. I slog along at my own speed. Soaked by a thunderstorm, in a shelter in Virginia, I ask myself “Am I having fun yet?” I had to cancel my sections this year, in favor of cataract surgery. I might hike the 100 Mile Wilderness when I recuperate. The Presis can wait for next year. And, maybe, by the time I hit 70, I might finally make it up Springer Mountain. If arthritis doesn’t kill me first. Why hike? Darned if I know. But I like it.:smokin

I’ve considered why I hike…and have been doing so since Boy Scout days in the early 70’s, and over the years the same response always comes to the surface.
I know when I was a kid I craved the smell of pine and hemlock trees, the cool breeze that flows through a rhodo tunnel next to a mountain stream, and the nightime stars that dare you to reach up and touch them.
Now, no longer a kid, the cravings are still there and the enjoyment of hiking revolves around more than the weekend “fix” in nature to get the above mentioned. The urge has progressed to experience it more often…thus the dream of the thruhike, yet to come…Lord willing. The outdoors and hiking have entered my being, changed my perception of the world and what’s really important, settled my nerves when the workload and daily grind raise my blood pressure, and always renews my appreciation for my God and His concern for me in this life and eternity to come.
Just thinking about it gets me going…I think I’ll go out and take a walk.
