Sooo, what do you do at one of these thingies? Hang around and talk trail, slide shows, funnels cakes, what? Kind of like trail days?

It’s a ton of useful “long distance hiking” information. I went last year and learned a lot about the CDT and PCT. More informative than Trail Days, but not as fun if in the under 40 crowd, unless of course you’re good ol’ hiker trash. Definitely worth attending if you enjoy learning.

But I am under 40?! I’ll shower first. Need some CDT info, so cool. I may make it.

It’s a time to reconnect with trail buddies, and to meet new ones. It’s a time to learn about other long distance hikes, such as the CDT and PCT. It’s a time to learn about the latest trends in backpacking, and see what’s the latest in gear.

Much better than trail days which to me appeared to be full of underage locals partying and drinking.

In my opinion, it’s not to be missed. I plan to be there.

Welp, it’s a reunion for long trail hikers, a way to stay connected, and a way to maintain the Trail community. Friday night there’s a ‘call’ of hiking classes in the auditorium where each class stands in turn to hoots and applause, there are seminars on everything from bear-bagging to female hiker issues to mail drops, Warren Doyle will do his 3 1/2 hour how-to-hike-the-AT workshop, hikers like Bill Irwin, Spur&Ready, Mags and Flyin’Brian and many others will put on talks and slide shows about all kinds of long trails and the folks that hike them, there’s a ‘Hiker Fair’ for gear sellers/buyers, authors will talk about their books, Huey’s going to screen his Katahdin movie, there’s a dance, there’s a get-together of AT '03ers to yak about this year on the trail, there’s always a post Gathering Trail Work trip, and some during Gathering spur-of-the-moment hikes, there’s the nightly campfire… and tons more. Show up, go with the flow, and you’re bound to enjoy yourself.
And there’s a great campground, which some folks never seem to leave. It’s held in a beautiful college town near lots of super AT hiking. Heck, some folks have been to several Gatherings and never sat through a single workshop! There are pubs, restaurants, college cafeterias, breakfast dives, and pizza joints to cruise. Last time it was in Dartmouth it was Homecoming weekend, which provided lots fun interaction with the upper crust alumni. The main event, in my opinion, is the people! Hundreds of hikers, helpers, maintainers, dreamers, even internet posters

So, “What’s the Gathering”? It’s what you want it to be. You can put on a workshop or do a slideshow if you want. You can learn, teach, join, watch, meet, hike, tend the campfire, wander, volunteer, talk or listen. Check out the links at www.aldha.org for info on the campground and schedules.
See you there!

There are going to be some really good workshops - as usual. One thing of interest, George Stefanos, who wrote, “Then the Hail Came” will be there. I’d like to meet him. Also Chris Townsend, another long distance hiking writer will be speaking.
