1 GB Memory Cards

For anyone using a digital camera on the trail this year, I just bought a Lexar 1 GB CompactFlash memory card from Sam’s Club for $70. This will hold approximately 409 pictures on a 5 megapixel camera. (320 on 6 megs, 512 on 4 megs, 853 on 3 megs)

To me this was a no-brainer, as I wont have to worry about mailing cards home or transfering images to CD’s.

I bought mine in a package with a telephoto lens, a wide angle lens, a case, a USB card reader, a 3 piece filter kit, a rechargeable battery kit, and a cleaning kit. All that for $250. I’m set to take some kick ass pictures in the future! Mine holds 700 pictures at 5 Megapixels. You must have the quality cranked up, as that definitely brings the count down.

Where did you buy that kit and for what kind of camera?

Nomad, that would make me nervous as hell to have 409 eggs in one basket! Oo

It doesn’t happen very often, in fact it never happened to me, but it is possible that your CF card could become corrupt and then you could lose everything. Taking a 1GB isn’t a bad idea, but not backing it up for 6 months is. I would at LEAST make a copy every month or so. I made 2 copies every month. Believe me, your pictures aren’t something you want to lose.

Also, crank that sucker’s quality and resolution up as high as it will go. You can take less, but man, it’s worth having the extra quality. I cranked my quality about halfway and I’m kinda kicking myself for not having it cranked the whole time.

I got a 40GB hard drive that read every kind of flash card,i have paid this X-drive pro II 200 dollars in France for my PCT Hike last summer, i took 1600 pictures and for me this is the only way to have enought space to store my Pictures.
the only hassle is to find a place to re-charge the device because the battery life is just ok…

It is good to havea large capacity memory stick/card but six months is a long time to wait to see pictures. I accidently erased my pictures and now I HAVE TO go back to Springer Mountain to retake them. BTW Lots of photo stores along the trail can make discs that one can send home so others can enjoy the “rough picture show” until one gets home to put together the finished product after the hike. These cost between $1.99 and $10.00 depending where and who does them.

I’m using 2 memory cards. I plan to switch out every few weeks. Absolutely keep your camera’s resolution set high.
Also, turning off the digital screen saves battery power.
MY camera is a Kyocera SR5 (f=7.3-21.9mm)(3x zoom). I love it because it is easy to use and I’m only beginning to learn what I can do with digital photography.

Sorry it took so long to reply, but I bought a Canon A95 and that kit off an internet site called www.beachcamera.com

I went back to check if they still had that deal going, and they appear to not even sell the camera anymore. I found the deal by going to www.pricegrabber.com or one of those kinds of sites that compares prices of a million different internet sites. It is usually $340 for just the camera in stores, and I got it for $280. That kit was 50% off. I hope you can find a deal like that on whatever camera you are looking for.
