I booked my first business class flights with Qatar recently. I had a voucher with BA from a flight I’d cancelled and Qatar was an option on the route I wanted. Their business class seems to be highly rated so went for it.

As soon as I booked I wanted to select my seats. On the BA website it said I could do this on Qatars website. I could register and find my booking on the Qatar airways website and app but could not change my seat on either.

So I tried:

calling qatar U.K. customer service. The number either doesn’t connect due to ‘network error’ or it does connect but after a short pre-recorded message the line goes dead and disconnects. Have tried many times over multiple days

contacted via DM on Twitter. I get a quick response asking for flight details. I send these immediately then after that no response. It’s been ‘only’ 8hrs I guess but with most companies it might take a while to reach someone but once you do they usually reply fairly quickly. Reading peoples tweets to Qatar airways it seems they do not respond easily at all

called their main customer service line in Doha. Here it doesn’t disconnect and i stayed on hold for a couple of minutes but then thought about the large phone costs if I stay on hold for too long so I hung up

At the end of the day a seat change is not that big a deal though the seats I’ve been given currently are nearly all ones I don’t like.

This experience itself has put me off the idea of flying with Qatar ever again. What if it’s a serious issue with time constraints? I also find it infuriating in general as I considered them a major international airline and I’ve never experienced such difficulties in contacting a company. Being on hold (as long as it’s a U.K. number) I can deal with. I’ve been on hold for 1hr+ with BA and while it’s a bit annoying I don’t mind as I always reach someone and when I do they’re always helpful. I just put my phone on speaker and do something else until someone picks up.

I live in london so I’ve half a mind to go all the way to Heathrow to their office but that’s my last chance option as it takes me about an hour to get there if I take the tube.

Does anyone have any advice?
