1 year itch - Appalachian Trail

Today was me and Little Train’s one year anniversary since we began our hike on springer and I am going nuts thinking about hiking…our conversation alternates between “remember when…” and our plans for hiking and doing trail magic this summer…trail magic will probably involve a barbeque and beer if I have my way…we miss the life and our trail friends…I’m hoping maybe you will shed a few tears for me and tell me “It’ll be alright, heatmizer…hang in there buddy…you’ll get to hike again soon”…what I wouldn’t give for a big stinky hug from a hiker right now…

Hey Heatmizer… in a funny kind of way, makes me feel better knowing I’m not the only one with a severe case of AT withdrawal. Let’s see… a year ago today I was just about to enter Damascus. I could almost TASTE the beer and pizza at Quincy’s. I could feel the hot shower… I SOOOOO want to be hiking right now. I’m trying to figure out if I can get back to Springer in April 2003. Keep hoping another trip on the trail will get rid of this monkey on my back. I have a feeling it won’t get rid of it…might even make it worse. I keep hearing this low whisper in my ear…pct…pct…pct!!!

Heatmizer: Started out last year on 3/2. On 3/2 this year had the same heart rending nostalgia you refer to. Sat down and read my journal. Made it worse and better at the same time. Ahh the trail the trail.

I’m speaking from experience when I say thru-hiking a second time will not stop the itch. Funny - For the first two and a half months of the second hike, I kept muttering to myself, “I am NOT doing this again.” Now it’s all I can think of doing. Stop me before I hike again!

Except the road to recovery for us mud addicts isn’t twelve it’s twelve-million steps. Sorta like buzzin’ on a dozen Cokes? Gimmi trail gimmi trail, throw the tennis ball, throw the tennis ball.

You guys…now you’ve done it. I was OK until I found this website. So, I’m leaving my job and going to Springer on Tuesday. Will another lap on the AT make me well?

That’s right, keep on hiking! If you feel you have to go, go! Pay no mind to the strange looks you may receive from relatives who just don’t get it- “you already DID that!” What’s wrong with being addicted to hiking?
