I have to argue on this one. In 2009 I started SOBO from Kahtahden with a very bad cold/cough. I was grateful for White House Landing. I was treated with gracious hospitality and given fresh tomatoes and berries to help my cold. I took a zero there to feel better and because I planned it because I had heard GOOD things about it. They provide a service in a difficult to reach spot and sacrifice some to do so. Perhaps you should take the time to talk to them instead of thinking they should cater to your every whim. They are good folks. They were gracious hosts to me.

Glad to hear you had a nice experience, I too crossed the Hundred with a cold, would have loved to take a zero with them but had family coming to my summit date. I personally think they are nice, my mistake was sounding their air horn twice (the second time after 25 minutes passed, thinking they didn't hear the first). The gentlemen was not pleased and far from nice for such an innocent action on my part. I'm sure he had a bad day. However, some people do go through life thinking it is half-empty and that behind every silver lining is a cloud. Despite my attempts to engage, the impression was apparently cast in his heart. The first time (the second I just explained) I met the husband two years earlier, once again a sour mood was my greeting. However, his mood changed quickly after he witnessed me dropping a $5 into his motorboat gas jar donation, then I was family and smiles were everywhere. Maybe they've had a tough go of it up there or that not enough spend enough, he did mention that they didn't make enough and this was before the finnacial crisis hit all of America. Graciousness seems to be easier when its connected to money apparently. I for one was not bent out of shape, his mood was no cloud in my day and I paid for their service and ask only for a friendly disposition, maybe that was extra? My encounter though is not an isolated one, I have two experiences and both seemed consistent with the husband, not the wife.
It sure is a beautiful spot but for so many completing a thru-hike it’s hard to stop and linger so close to Mt. Katahdin unless one is ahead of plan. I think that second sounding on the air horn was too much for him on that particular day?

ditto, postcard, except I don't think it was on that particular day. sometimes people just try to run a service too long and get tired of it, :-(
