Depends on what you want from your hike. What type terrain? Hike with the thru-hikers? Your experience/conditioning level? Do you need public transportation to or from the trail?

A few more details will help folks narrow down their suggestions.

How far from the trail are you and do you care how far you have to travel?

Yes, more details please. And I’m sure you’ll get a slew of answers.

Peter,

I try to do a 12-15 day hike in late May, early June each year. 2005 I did from Damascus to Wood’s Hole outside of Pearisburg, Ga. This was 12 day hike and included Mt. Rogers which is a great place to hike and then had several other highlights along the way. It is a relatively easy hike and in early June the weather is mild and the wild flowers are really pretty. In 2006 I started at Wood’s Hole and ended up at the Tye River just beyong The Priest. This is a great hike that has a lot of highlights- good climbs, great views, even spectacular views- includes McAfee, Dragon’s Tooth, the James, Cold Mtn. just to name a few . In early June you get to meet a lot of the thru hikers and many section hikers. This was a 15 day hike.

And on both of these hikes there are good logistical support possbilities in terms of getting to and from the trail.

Then my wife and I did about 12 days in the White Mountains in August and though the mileage was much less, that is incredible part of the trail.
Good luck on your hike.
