1998 PCT/JMT Hikers

With so many questions about snow hiking in the Sierras this year, I think 1998 PCT or JMT Hikers should give a report on how they managed their hikes with the record snow in the Sierras.

Did you thru-hike on your schedule, wait until later in the summer, flip-flop, roadwalk, give up, etc.?

How did you navigate with days of never seeing the trail? How long did it take you accomplish sections such as Crabtree Meadows to Bull Frog Lake (over Forester)?

Did you use crampons and an ice axe? Did you wish you had crampons and an ice axe?

This year’s group of thru hikers can benefit from any information you can give them.

I have tried to get the 98 group to do so but so far no response. I did talk with jim horan who was one of the 9 and he said for him it didn’t matter how deep the snow was as you were still going to post hole etc anyway…so go…
i have 74 names of hikers between mill creek summit to lone pine that year…less then half of them were going to try it but by the time they got to k/ms it was down to 18 who went on with the idea of trting it. and 38 left at or before kmdws…with about 25 who did a f/f and 9 who ent direct…so thats a lot who bailed out…
