I know the relo adds two miles, but I don´t know what it is like. Has anyone hiked the new relo and can they describe it for me. Just interested. The Moreland Gap Shelter register was the funniest on the trail because of all the bitchin´about the walk from 19E. Just wonderin´what it is like now.

I am curious about the relo, too? I hiked that section twice, once going sobo and once going nobo. It was about the same either way. I heard the relo was supposed to have a much friendlier grade.

The relo was open last year when we did our sobo hike and we heard several stories about how long it was, but we really didn’t think that it seemed to add 2 miles. The terrain was quite easy and there were some nice views from pasture areas along the way. I don’t really know what all the complaining was about. I think Bob and the crew did a great job on it.

If you hiked the old section of trail then the relo should be really nice. The previous section had brutal climbs and decents which where short but steep. I am looking forward to hiking this new section.

Does anyone know where the new relo begins and ends? (ends and begins for SBs)

It begins at Walnut Mountain Road. Check out ATC site under recent relos. Found a great map of the relo there.

Sorry to be ignorant. But what exactly is a relo? i mean, i assume that means a relocation, but does that mean the relocation is not the offical trail?

Looks like a more interesting walk. I didn’t mind the other too much; I new what to expect. Others got caught short in this section-lots of grumbling and well-earned complaints about the trail profiles. I’ll have to rehike this section. Any good camping areas near the falls or elsewhere?

Last I was there was before the short road walk relo. I was the first along the trail that day. I feathered my poles and walked swiftly but as silently as possible along the road. It was amusing to try to get by without alerting the dogs. At one house there was a puppy in front that would look at me and then look toward the house at a large brown sleeping hound, but he never made a sound. A few minutes after I went back in the woods all hell broke loose.

The guidebook said not to drink the water in this area. I thought that it was because of pasturage upstream. At the last house before entering the woods (as I remember), there was a 4" white sewerage pipe extending from underneath the house to a stream, which drained the way I was going. I followed the guidebook suggestion and alerted others that were camped along suspect streams. Odd that there is no warning other than in the guidebook or word of mouth.

The ATC relo map differs from the TN-Eastman. The ATC map shows the trail slipping back into NC for one thing.

C-Giddy- A relo is a relocation, when its said the AT has been relocated the relo is the new AT and the old trail is either abandoned or renamed. I don’t know which applies in the 19E relo.
