19E to Damascus?

A few questions about the section from 19E to Damascus.

Is this a fairly easy section?
It has been real dry in the deep south this year. What’s the water situation in this area?
What is the favored hiker pub in Damascus?

Any other info is appreciated.

Thanks!!

Not sure what would be fairly easy. But it is a great section hike. Should be enough water. A must stop is at Kincora Hostel and stay with Bob and Pat Peoples. One of the best hostels on the trail. Laura Fork Gorge is beautiful and the Eastman Hiking Club does a great job in maintaining the trail in this area. Pond Mountain can be challenging 2,000 straight up and 2,000 straight down. Then you come to Watauga Lake which is another beautiful water source on the trail. The last 18 miles of this section is a descent into Damascus. Mt. Roger’s Outfitters do a great job and offer outstanding services. Several good places in Damascus for a good drink. I stayed at “The Place” a church run hostel in town. Only other info is Do Not Park anywhere near 19E. The local are still mad about land being taken from them 30 years ago, either that or they just don’t cotton to thru hikers. Bilko

My experience with locals in and around Damascus is that they are only too happy to have hikers, backpackers, fishermen, kayakers, bikers, etc. in the area. Outdoor activities make up a huge portion of their economy.

Yes, there are always locals who are troublemakers and buttheads, but that’s the same everywhere.

Thats a nice section hike, and like Bilko stated, you must stay at Kincora, and you’ll know why once you do. Also, and I am a biased here, stay or camp around Vandeventer Lean-to. The view from the back is outstanding. The water source is a drag to get to, but I am quite fond of that lean-to, and I have some great memories there. Also, the folks who live on or near 19E or mellowing a little, but still don’t park your car there at the road crossing. When you see all the trash here, you’ll realize why. Take care and have a great hike! Just Jim
