2002 Hiker offers advice/help

Hi all,

My girlfriend and I live in Scotland and thru-hiked the PCT in 2002. Before and during the hike we received wonderful help from SO many people, if we can offer any help or advice based on our experience we’d be delighted to do so.

I wrote my own version of the “Town Guide” which I’d be happy to e-mail to anyone who wants it. E-mail me at simonwillis@backpacker.com

We hiked ultra-light-ish… alcohol stove, Tarptent, GoLite Gust sacks throughout. Our pack base weights varied from 12lb to 18lb.

We sent food boxes to just about every possible resupply location… sometimes they held everything, sometimes just a few items.

Our trip journal is here:

On the assumption people don’t read these posts daily, I’ll re-post this offer from time to time.

Hey Simon,

I am thru-hiking the AT this year but definitaly want to hike the PCT and CDT in years to come. I would love a copy of your “town guide”. Thank you for offering us this!

PS: How did you like using a Tarptent? Did this present many problems? I really don’t want to carry a tent due to its weight but am worried that I might NEED it. Wadayathink?

Cheers,
BP

Please send me your list. I am planning a PCT thru hike for '04. I did a thru hike of the At in 2002. Thanks!

Hi there, I am gearing up for an AT thru-hike but just spent four months out west and was blown away by my first glimpse of California and Oregon. I would love to hear more about the PCT, especially when you began/ended and how much technical know-how you needed for the desert and alpine sections (i.e. ice axing, cramponing, etc.)

I’ve also put together a list of town, trail, and water information for the PCT. In 2002, we found that the Town Guide was inadequate and just plain WRONG much of the time. So, when I got home, I put together my own little town guide, and together with contributions from other hikers, it’s grown into a really good planning tool. Go to: www.trailjournals.com/yogi then go to the PCT 2002 journal. The town/trail/water information is the last four entries of my journal. If anyone has any questions about this information, please email me at yogilists@hotmail.com. I also recommend subscribing to the PCT mailing list, which can be found on the PCTA website: www.pcta.org

Hello!

I’m planning on hiking from the Canadian border to the Oregon border starting in mid-July. Presently I’m reading a book on the PCT by Jeffrey Schaffer, and he writes about how Hwy. 20 at Rainy Pass to Hwy. 3 in Manning Park will probably be snow-covered, icy, and very buggy. Should I buy an ice ax, crampons and lots of bug spray and mosquito netting??

Also, I recently purchased a Go-Lite bag and I’m having second thoughts about using it for my PCT hike. It’s so small!!! How did you hike the PCT using the Go-Lite method?

I’d appreciate any advice you can give me!

Thanks!!

I used a homemade version of that quilt and it did just fine, as I shared it with my partner. On the AT I used the Go-lite one man, and it worked fine. It’s size is relative, depending on you.

I saw no snow at Rainey Pass, and I was there on Oct 5th.
