2003 SOBO sightings

Did a weekender on the Smokies AT this weekend and saw a southbounder from Connecticut who goes by John Galth (sp?)(from a fictional character in the book Atlas Shrugged). He stayed at Cosby Knob Friday night, and expects to reach Springer by Christmas.

In the shelter register, a couple of other southbounders were there last week, Jessica and BS. BS left a piece of an earworm in his entry which I thought appropriate for the snowy season up there: “When Omar the eskimo gets here, everybody’s gonna jump for joy.”

BTW when I was at Cosby Knob shelter Friday night, these six good ol boys from Florida showed up. It was a riot. They hauled in two six-packs of beer, a six-pack of Coke, a bottle of Boone’s Farm, a full-size axe (!), loads of food, and a wood saw – among other things, like a huge plastic tarp they used to hang across the shelter when the snow started blowing in. They didn’t let all that equipment go to waste, either. They worked as a team and cut enough firewood to have us a roaring fire well into the night, that was still going stong after we turned in at 10:00 or so (Cosby Knob has a fireplace).

Did you guys burn a cross also?

Yep you’re right, I was trying to remember the name of that eskimo and it’s Quinn, not Omar. Maybe Omar is a sand eskimo.

No need to burn any crosses that snowy night, everything was White!

steve hiker,

No one here cares about your personal opinions regarding race and ethnicity. This forum is about the AT and backpacking only. Go to a Klan site if you want to spout racist crap. I only hope I never run into lunatics like you on the Trail. You won’t be welcome in any AT communities.

I met John Galt in the second week of August on Baldplate Mtn. in Maine. He did not sound too optimistic about making it all the way. I am glad that he pushed through.

Hey ATrain,

Did you notice that Redneck initiated the racist thread ?

Did it matter to you that he stereotyped all southern good ole boys as cross burning racists ?

I guess that sort of bigotry is ok ?

Why would he not be welcome in any AT communities ? Why not engage someone with different beliefs and illustrate your own beliefs to them. Shutting people out will nevr foster cahnge and growth.

Jools,
first off I didn’t comment on RyE’s post because I wasn’t sure if he meant it. Seems you can read it as mocking the sterotype about southerners, not actually making it. Yes I agree that the sterotype of southerners being rednecks can also be hurtful and wasteful, however Steve Hiker has a need to continue to share his racist views on this site, when he already knows that many folks don’t appreciate his comments.
I’m not attempting to "shut him out " or anything of the such. This has been a reoccuring theme with steve and people have attempted to educate him. Its apparent though that he does this more to push peoples vision, knowing that there is little to no censorship on this site. He was asked to stop and keep his views to himself but apparently hes got some issues.
The AT community is one that is diverse and open minded, but certainly does not stand for bigotry and racism like this. His scene describing drinking and partying in a shelter illustrates a misunderstanding of the Trail. Its unfortunate that people use the trail as an arena and venue to party, far from its intended use.
