Does anyone know what kind of snow year it’s been for Colorado this year? Should I plan a late June start because of snow pack or not?

Check out http://postholer.com/cgi-bin/postHoler?trail=CDT for current snowfall totals along the CDT.

I had planned to hike a big chunk of the CT this year, but its looking like my hiking buddy is available for the entire month of June but has to go back to school at the beginning of July. Current snowfall is real low for some of the CT sections----- if it stays that way could we leave early June? Is the risk of getting a lot of snow mid-hike too great to leave, no matter what the snowpack is looking like?

A low snow year does not mean a no snow year.
Generally speaking, you will be slogging and have navigation issues if you start in early June. Is it doable? Sure. But,depending upon your experience level with snow and navigation, it may not be something you WANT to do. Plus, there is almost always a snow dump in April and May that can change the snow pack level.
Personally, I think waiting to mid-June is about the earliest you want to go. But, that could change. You never know.
good luck!

We have been getting a lot of snow in Colorado lately, so be sure to check the levels. You may also want to consider bringing Yaktrax or similar traction devices. I’ve been doing that for some front range hikes lately.
