2010 Mtn Bike Race on CT

According to last year’s coordinator, the annual Colorado Trail Race for mountain bikes will probably begin on Monday Aug 02 at 6am from the Denver trailhead. The race historically takes anywhere from 4 to 9 days and now covers most of the CT.

For details on past races - routes, timing, etc. - please see http://www.climbingdreams.net/ctr/

2010 hikers might want to take this event into consideration during their planning.

I Agree with Bob B. On the CT/CDT, when the mountain bike racers show up, they are going fast and furious. After all they are in a race. Hikers, keep your music (headset) in your pocket and your ears open for the noise they make. South bounders, they will be coming in at your back. North bounders, you may see them long before you hear them. In both cases hikers, when they pass, turn your body, face the trail and carefully step backwards a bit. This way your pack is out of the way. Mountain bikers, hit the brakes and share the trail. Respect gets respect. Peace.

This is not a typical bike race. While there may be issues close to the start in Denver, it’s small size and long length disperses it quickly. I was through hiking the CT southbound two years ago during the race and encountered several racers south of Buena Vista. There were absolutely no issues whatsoever, and all but one of them stopped to talk a bit.
