Hey everyone, what maps did you use in 2011? Halfmile, Postholer, Erik, WP guidebooks… were you happy with your choice?
I like the looks of the postholer maps and the fact that the $ goes to the PCTA.

Didn’t hike in 2011 but in 2008 I used the databook and schaffer guidebooks. 2009 I used just the databook but saw Erik the Black around. In 2010 I used the databook again but was blown away by the number of Erik the Black books out there.
I really enjoy the classic PCT databook. I can count on one hand the number of datapoints that felt even vaguely wrong, as they’re all pulled from the time-tested schaffer guidebooks. For maps I feel like the half-mile maps in conjunction with the databook would be plenty. The postholer maps look good but I have no info on them.
I’m no fan of the Erik the Black books. Weird maps, riddled with odd errors and ultimately a half-way solution that doesn’t work as well as a databook alongside full maps. That’s just my opinion, of course. Everyone had an opinion on the erik the black data, even people that liked it admitted it was far from perfect.
I’m excited to see what the postholer maps look like when I’m out in 2012. I’ll probably use the databook again, though. And if the snow is really bad, the tom harrison JMT maps for the high sierra. Halfmile’s maps if the snow is really bad elsewhere, too, like this past year. free!
