Hi Folks,

I have 7 days of vacation in July and would like to spend it hiking a section of the PCT in the Sierra’s. Does anybody have any suggestions for a 35-45 mile section?

Thanks in advance…

Section K of the PCT is from highway 50 to highway 80 along the west shore of Lake Tahoe. At 60 miles it’s a bit further than what you are looking for but it sure is pretty. I’m hiking it in August with my daughter. Sonora Pass (highway 108) to highway 89 is 31.6 miles and highway 89 to highway 50 is 44.6 miles. These are all in the high Sierra with easy on and off points. Check out www.pctplanner.com - it’s proven useful to me.

The PCT from Echo Summit (Hwy 50) to Donner Summit (Hwy 80) is fantastic. I did it last October with a small group (in two days, but that’s another story) and I can’t wait to do it again at a slower pace. While it is a little over 60 miles you can cut off a few miles at the beginning by taking a water taxi from the trailhead at Echo Lake to the border of Desolation Wilderness. From there, it’s a wonderfully scenic trail through the heart of Desolation Wilderness and, later, the edge of Granite Chief Wilderness. As beautiful as Desolation Wilderness is, I actually like the second half of the trip even more - a long part of that trail is along the crest of the mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe. Highly recommended, and easily doable in 5-7 days.
