Hello,
I have 40-50 days to dedicate to the Appalachian Trail for a hike in May-June. I was wondering what you would recommend for an intermediate and extremely dedicated hiker who wants to make the most out of this experience.

A little too early to start up north, but you could if you wanted. I would suggest starting in Damascus and hike north to Harpers Ferry. Virginia is the longest state on the AT. Damascus to HF is roughly 550 miles and doable in 40-50 days. Starting in Damascus in May/June means you can take lighter gear such as clothes and sleeping bag which will lighten your load.

I would go to Harpers Ferry then Hike North. With any luck you should make it to the start of the Whites. It will be less crowded and the weather will be cooler.

I would skip PA and start at the Delaware Water Gap. Easy to get to by bus from NYC.
