A buddy and I are looking to do an 8-9 day hike in September and I was wondering about a good section to do in New England. Our initial plan was to do the 75 miles in the Smokies, but due to the prolonged drought there and other issues, it is becoming less and less likely that the Southern Appalachians will be the destination.

I know that places like Front Royal, VA and points to the North have gotten much more moisture, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good 75 mile section that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg to do.

BC,
the massanutten trail is a 71 mile circuit hike that runs mostly along the ridge of the massanutten mountain and others that surround Fort Valley. I’m planning to hike it this fall.

Early Sept. is a great time to be in Northern New England. The Whites are usually crowded along the AT, but there are hundreds of miles of beautiful trail throughout the region, or doing a section of Vermont’s Long Trail, lots of water in the southern half. A good example in the Whites, start at Waterville Valley, head north as you tag 4,000 footers, into the Pemi, up and over the Bonds to the AT, get a hut for a night, then east, or west, or kick back and let the little birdies sing.

Another option for a 70-mile hike is the Laurel Highlands Trail in SW PA. It’s easier than New England hiking; you won’t need 9 days, more like 5 1/2. Check out my journal and read about it here.
