A Cuba to Pie Town water report

#1

Hi, I am a southbound CDT hiker. I am now at the famous Toaster House(!) in Pie Town, New Mexico.

Here are the good water sources I found in between Cuba and Pie Town:

Sept. 21st, Carried water out of Cuba, NM
Sept. 21st/22nd, Jones Canyon Spring had water
Sept. 22nd, Arroyo de los Cerros Colorados, the water spigot was NOT working, muddy dirt cow tanks nearby
Sept. 23rd, Ojo Frio Spring had clear water underground the plywood cover.
Sept. 23rd, Ojo de los Indios Spring had wonderful flowing water. The was an enchanting place. I saw a bear in this canyon too.
Sept. 24th, Both the Ranger Tank and the seasonal Tire Tank had BAD(undrinkable) water.
Sept. 24th, Upper American Spring (on the Mt. Taylor route) was overflowing with water.
Sept. 25th, Gooseberry Spring (on the Mt. Taylor route)had NO water only mud.
Sept. 25th, Big Spring (1/4 mile off the new CDT, south of Mt. Taylor route) was completely DRY or I could not find the spring.
Sept. 25th, the BLM Office just north of Grants had an outside water spigot by the picnic table that was turned on even after the office was closed.

From Grants to Pie Town I followed the Red route on Jonathan Ley’s 2007/2008 maps

Sept. 26th, Carried water out of Grants, NM
Sept. 27th, Lower Bonita Canyon Windmill, the steel tank had clear but slighty green water. The windmill had fallen over but the tank was full. Lots of plants growing in the water but the water looked OK.
Sept. 27th, the EAST trailhead of the Zuni-Acoma trail had a very small water cache (less then one gallon left)
Sept. 27th, I found a small clear pool of water on the north end of Rim Trail above the Narrows (by trail mile marker 3.5).
Sept. 28th, The solar powered windmill at turnoff to Cebolla/Sand Canyon (just after highway milepost 31)had wonderful clear water. There was also a very small water cache (less than one gallon left)here too.
Sept. 28th, The windmill 3.5 miles south of the York Ranch/Armijo Canyon jct. had lots of usable water.
Sept. 29th, The Thomas Mt. Ranch is still welcoming CDT hikers stop in for wonderfully re-freashing water.
Sept. 29th, Pie Town!

Hope someone finds this helpful.
