To those who take digital cameras on your thruhikes, how do you deal with batteries? do you buy a lot and put them in mail drops or recharge at hostels? I am looking to buy a digital camera for a thru hike and i dont know where to start. also please tell which camera you have and how well it works for you. Thanks!

Hi Noname -
some one posted a similar inquiry about digital cameras & it annoyed some people because ‘it has all been posted before’ but I generally like to annoy people so here goes -

On my thruhike I carried a Canon elph 260 lt (APS) It is still going strong after 3000 AT miles which is why I stuck with a canon when I went digital -
I bought a Canon A60. Its an amazing camera for what it cost. It eats batteries especially if you leave the LCD on all the time. The manual says it will take 800 shots with the LCD off. If I hiked again I would consider carrying the charger along if it’s light enough. Also I would have to buy a second flash card. I’d also like to here how others managed a digital on the trail-

Anyone interested in the elph? reasonable offers considered -

I have the Sony DSC-P71 3.2mp that used 2-AA nickel metal hydride batteries. I was able to take around 80 pics without flash over a 2 week period before they needed to get recharged. They only cost around $8 for a 2 or 4 pack and are rechargable. The pictures turned out excellent. Keep it in a ziplock bag when not using it.

I have the same one as Nooga - the Sony P71. Love it. You will be impressed with the pictures. It has an amazing number of features for a small camera and it’s light. My batteries have also lasted longer than I expected.
