Please help me. I think I’m addicted to trail journals. When I’m not hiking, I reading about hiking. I can’t stop thinking about hiking. I need some help. Do you think I should quit cold turkey or slowly ween myself away from trailjournals. Say, one journal a week or 10-12 entries per day…what do you think?

It’s called a positive addiction. All of us have some sort of addiction. Some addictions are negative and some are positive. These addictions are okay until they interfere with allowing you to lead a normal, productive life. Drinking alcohol occassionally causes little harm, drinking alcohol every day is a problem. Jogging on a regular basis is positive, jogging or running until your body fat is 2% is a problem. Reading Trail Journals on a daily basis causes little problems. Going to TJ the first thing you do at work, writing posts, and replying to post everyday, is starting a problem. Reading one complete journal a day is a serious problem. If you find yourself going to different hiking websites and after awhile you find you have been on for hours is an addiction. For myself, I think I need to go COLD TURKEY. Tomorrow.

Addicted? You bet. It’s not hard, especialy after doing a thru-hike spending about six months of eating, drinking and sleeping AT.
I have to, like many others, addmit to my addiction.
Happy trails.:happy :happy

I was so addicted that I knew the location of most of the AT Class of '03 on a daily basis through their journal entries. 30 minutes into my first section hike, I ran into a thru-hiker and identified him by name based on the photos from his journal. It freaked him out and scared my partners as well.

Nowadays, I have my own section hiking journal entries to write and review. “Doing” cured my addiction, although I still study various journals before hitting the next section.

The AT caused my hiking addiction. Like a dumbass my first real long hike was 100 miles on the AT. Thanks for the buzz AT.
