Adirondacks - when's the earliest

When’s the earliest for hiking up some hills in the adirondacks? I am trying to train for a JMT trip in late summer (mid august), and would like to get out into the adirondacks since they’re the closest mountains. I’ve read they close the trails in may to mid-june for mud? Any idea when they usually open?

Of course blackflies/mossies will be killer at that time of year…

Thanks,
Sophie

I’m not aware of trail closure in the Adirondacks. Here’s the DEC web page for additional information.

Bear resistant canisters are now required in the Eastern High Peaks Region (See web page for details)

I would recommend that you not hike from the end of May until after the 4th of July due to the Black Flies. This situation gets even better as you get closer to August.

I agree with Pilgrim, the Flies and Bugs are really bad untill early July. The ideal time to hike in the Adirondacks is in the fall.As above,Bear Canisters now required. Also,no dogs allowed in High Peaks region.Keep Rover on short leash at home.

Id stay clear of the “Marcy Dam - Phelps” region… Bears galore! and those suckers are not shy. Ive seen one rip right in a tent and also had three plunge right into our camp and take a pack. People always think Im telling tales but, after 4 seasons as a trips leader, Ive seen my share.

Stay off the “tourist” trails and you will have less mud and a nicer hike. Id stick to the isoloted hikes, “Hurricane, Regious and Big & Lil Crow”.

Trails are open now but you’ll find some chill in the air still.

Enjoy!!! The ADK’s rock!!!
