Unfortunately, the people at the shelter chose too: 1) not properly hang/store food - there were graham crackers in the pack that the bear took and 2) The people in the shelter chose a kodak moment to film and take pictures of the bears action instead of attempting to scare the bear away at the beginning of the encounter.
To have to kill a bear due to the ignorance of hikers is a terrible thing to do. What should the consequences be for the campers that did not follow proper bear avoidance in bear country. Imagine what would have happened to these same people in grizzly bear country.
Don’t blame the bear, blame the hikerss/campers for their improper actions, ignorance and inaction.
Navigator
I agree with Navigator. It makes me sad–and angry–that a bear had to die because of people’s stupidity. I wish there were some way to punish the dumbasses.
