What do you think my chances are with checking my hiking bag with about 10oz of denatured alcohol stored inside of it? I know this is considered a big no-no, but has anybody tried traveling with that stuff stored in your bag?

good luck with that. a whole bunch of flammable liquid in a soda bottle is always popular with the airlines.
you know you can get denatured alcohol pretty much anywhere, right?

I recently talked with United Airlines about transporting a stove. They gave the go ahead with the stove without the fuel. Fuel is easy to come by around any trail that I am familiar with. Recommend making that purchase at a store on the way to the trail from the airport.
Enjoy your hike.

If you bring a prohibited item to an airline security checkpoint you may be criminally or civilly prosecuted, or at the very least asked to rid yourself of the item. The act of bringing such an item to the checkpoint is illegal, even if done accidentally.( such as after your hike) In todays security climate if you were found with such a quantity of fuel I think you would be looking at a serious fine at a minimum. In the unlikely event of the alcohol starting a fire on the plane you would be looking at 20 years+ under the provisions of the Patriot Act. Bottom line-bad idea.
