Airports Near The Sierras?

Hi All,

I have a July 1 wedding in Maine to attend, and I’m trying to figure out what my best options are for air travel (or a very very long bus ride).

I’m flying to SAN on the 8th, and I expect to be somewhere around KM on the 15th of June. I’ll be looking at one to two weeks of hiking out of KM depending on when I get there/snow.

What are my transportation options in the region, and what airport/bus terminal should I be looking at using?

Thanks!

In 2002, I left the PCT to attend a wedding the last weekend of June. I flew out of Reno NV. I had hiked to South Lake Tahoe, so Reno was only about an hours drive away.

If you’ll reach Kennedy Meadows, once you hitch out to highway 395, you should be able to get up to Reno or down to LA. Actually, LA might be easy, because you could call down to the Saufley’s from KM and see if a hiker could come pick you up.

In '04 there was a shuttle bus that went to the Reno airport from Mammoth Lakes.

my post titled “bakersfield” should have been in response to this thread. it’s about an hour and a half hitch down the highway at walker pass, 40 miles south of kennedy meadows, into bakersfield. easy to hitch back to this spot too. not so easy to hitch back into kennedy meadows if you’re getting off and back on.

wow, am i flaky today or what. the first time i read this post i didn’t see the “one to two weeks past kennedy meadows” part. reno is a much better option out of tahoe or mammoth lakes. should have never tried to stick my two cents in!

there is an airport just south of kennedy meadow on 395 in inyokern that makes two daily flights to LA. that is how i got home from the jmt last summer.

If you are heading north as far as I-80, you have the option of either Reno or San Francisco, depending on ticket availability/pricing via train, bus, or hitch.

If you fly out of SFO, the local “BART” commuter rail system can take you to the SFO airport from basically anywhere in the metropolitan area.

If you’re only as far as Whitney/Lone Pine, probably your best option is to hitch back to the Saufley’s in Agua Dulce (Hwy #395 to #14) and then take Metrolink into LA (Union Station) & finally Super Shuttle to LAX. I took this route twice last year (I flipped to Canada from Whitney) and easily found rides heading towards LA from Whitney.

Is this “knees” from '97?

Have a great hike!

Thanks for the help everyone. It looks like there are plenty of options, so I’ll play things by ear. I’m guessing that I’ll probably end up flying out of Reno when the time comes.

Freebird, sorry, I’m “Knees” AT’05.
