Alaska: Arctic Ocean Shoreline

If anyone has ever hiked on the North Slope of Alaska, I’d like to hear about it.

The North Slope of Alaska runs from the Arctic Ocean, south 200 miles, to the Brooks Range.

I’m more interested, in this thread, in hearing from people who’ve hiked on the shore of the Arctic Ocean or just slightly back from it. (I’ll ask about the Brooks Range later.)

Things like: time of year, temperatures, terrain, wildlife, duration of your trip, size of your party, how you got there, your thoughts and impressions, and so forth.

Thanks, Conan

I live outside fairbanks and might be able to find someone. I haven’t been there yet cuz my working season is THe season up there and I just haven’t had a chance. Boy, do I want to though…the brookies…man oh man… I do know that you have to be VERY careful on the coast or anywhere in this state. the terrian is WIDE open and you need life saving map and compass skills as well as a GPS. There are polar bears on the coast and ( of course ) grizzlies in the brookies. I know there are books on this…maybe try to find some online ?

This isn’t quite what you’re looking for, but is similar:

Dear Suge,

Thanks for the site regarding the Brooks Range; it was the second half of what I was looking for.

How is it that you were aware of the site? Are you located in Alaska? Is it your desire to hike the Brooks Range also? Fill me in, please.

The guy who did this trek posted the link here when he got back late summer or early Fall, I can’t remember trail name or year hiked on the AT (sometime in the past 3 years), but several chimed in and said hey to him. He has an impressive and amazing outdoor resume…

Dear Bluebearee,

The link you posted yield’s nothing on Google. Would you check it for errors and repost, please?

Question: I read your first posting, above, to say that the link you are providing leads to the website of a different Alaska hiker than the one Suge’s link connects to. Am I reading you correctly?

Or, are you saying that the Brooks Range Hiker that Suge linked us to also has a Trail Forums Journal that you want to let us know about?

Thanks.

I was providing the url to an earlier Trail Forums thread from late September. I just cut and paste it into my browser and it works. ? It didn’t wrap correctly, you need to highlight the whole link. It’s not a journal.

The guy (Colter) posts occasionally on whiteblaze, which is where I got the link. He put it up before starting his trip. There is no “hike” in the Brooks Range. It is much more committing than that, unless you get flown in by a float plane and flown out a week later. Any trip of extended length is a much more serious undertaking. The link I posted involved some food caches and subsistence hunting. In the other trip I know of, the people went in for 600 miles with no resupplies. It didn’t sound like much fun.
