Alaska fires - Appalachian Trail

Hi, Just thought I let folks know that AK has now surpassed its worst fire season ever… over 5 million acresand 600 blazes this year alone. The size of new jersey ! it has been quite a summer and very very smokey here today. Hard to breath. The wildlife moving around in a kinda bewildered turmoil… chilling. I am amazed that this doesn’t make much of a stir in the lower 48.

yappy, I’ve been paying attention (as much as I can) but it’s difficult to find stories down here.

My wife and I did some hiking last year in Denali and other spots. Alaska is a magnificent state and I’d encourage readers on this website to try and check it out.

Spent most of the summer and part of the winter in Alaska. The fires were terrible. Smoke very heavy. Spent many days inside due to heavy smoke. It is such a magnificent place that we should all do everything possible to protect and preserve it. It is our last great wilderness. A crime to even consider cutting, drilling and mining there. It would soon look like the lower 48 with Condo’s and Wal Mart on every mountain.

I agree Sm… but there are ALOT of folks that want to take advantage off all the gifts AK has. I doubt we will recognise this state in 20 years sad to say. Fairbanks is growing SO fast…out of control.

Aren’t fires a natural part of the forest, like rain and sunshine?
