Alcohol container

For those of you who carry an alcohol stove / cat stove or whatever–what type of container do you use to carry your alcohol? I was thinking about a water bottle, but that would sure suck to take a monster swig out of that when you’re thirsty. I have a MSR gas bottle that is super heavy that would fit the bill. I could relabel it, but its still heavy.

I used to use disposable water bottles for alcohol. Double-bag it in zip-loc bags for safety. Marked the bottle in large black letters ALCOHOL.

I used a disposable water bottle, marked clearly Alcohol then wrapped with clear tape so the marking would not rub off. Class of 2008.

I also used a soda bottle that I wrapped with duct tape. The tape marked it as my alcohol bottle by both sight and feel and the bottle gave me a great place to store extra duct tape for its many uses. Do not use an aluminum bottle as the alcohol will corrode the aluminum.

Sorry if this ends up a duplicate post, I’m not seeing my previous post.

I have a bottle with a built in measuring chamber. It looks similar to the fuel stabilizer bottle used for stored gasoline. I bought it from www.brasslite.com. If you don’t want to spend the money get a NOS Energy bottle. It looks like a Nitrous Oxide bottle, you won’t mistake it for your water bottle.

Hi Stephen! I used the Trangia Alcohol Stove on my thru-hike on the A.T. I used Heet, the yellow bottle, as my fuel and alcohol container. Heet is easy to find and you get a new container when you buy another bottle for your stove. It can also be mixed when buying fuel by the ounce at an outfitter, since it is the same alcohol that is sold for alcohol stoves. Used either the Heet bottle or a clearly marked plastic soda bottle. You DO NOT want to mistake this stuff. It is deadly in a very small amount.

I use a 10 oz clear squeezable plastic bottle, and take a piece of duct tape and write DA ( Denatured Alcohol ) on it, whatever kind of bottle you use make sure you label it correctly.

My favorite bottle is an 8oz Johnson’s baby oil bottle with a flip top squirt lid. They’re kind of flat like a flask. The 4oz bottles some of the UL vendors sell are okay for and overnight or short weekend trip if I’m not cooking a bunch or in warm weather but if it’s cold, I use a lot more fuel.

I plan to use a 16 oz Nalgene bottle that has markings on the side in oz and ml. I see the value in the Heet bottle and may switch, but I usually use Marine grade alcohol in my stove. Someone wrote that Alcohol is sold by the oz? Is this true and how available is the good stuff by the oz?

I don’t know what Marine grade alcohol is and I’ve never seen it sold along the AT. What is usually sold by the ounce at hostels and outfitters is Denatured Alcohol. Heet gas line antifreeze is sold in gas stations, convenience stores, Walmart, and numerous other stores.

Heet in the YELLOW bottle, works fine in alcohol stoves however Heet in the Blue bottle and rubbing alcohol contain water and creates soot that gets your pot pretty messy. Personally I think the Yellow Heet works great and I prefer it.
