Can I find Denatured alcohol on the trail or do I need to plan on shipping ahead?

In '12 I found HEET in nearly every town. Yogi’s town guide lists which stops have HEET/denatured, but needs a bit of updating. For example, Lordsburg NM is listed as not having alcohol, but ACE & a gas station mini-mart both carry HEET.

The only place that I recall where I was low & couldn’t find any was @ Ghost Ranch - I just made do with what I had.

You shouldn’t have any problem finding alcohol on the route.

I have used a denatured alcohol stove since 2003 on the AT, PCT, CDT, and Long Trail. There was one time in '07 on the CDT when I couldn’t obtain denatured alcohol/HEET. It was at the Sula Store & Resort, just down the hill from Chief Joseph Pass. But the store had 100% ethyl alcohol in the first aid section, which worked just fine. I have met other hikers who were using rubbing alcohol, which is 70% ethyl alcohol, for stove fuel. Sula Store may be stocking HEET this year. Check Yogi’s book–she’s usually right!
