Alcohol stove on LT

I’m planning Sept. thru-hike of the Long Trail Planning on using a pepsi can stove. What’s the availability of denatured alcohol, especially after Maine Junction. Thanks

I did the LT+ (Dalton, MA to Canada) in 2001 with an alcohol stove. I’m a pretty conservative cooker and actually didn’t need to refuel the whole time I was out (23 days). North of Maine Junction, you should easily be able to fill up in both Bristol (APP Gap) and Johnson (You walk right thru this one). There are probably other places to get it to, I just didn’t ever go into town unless I needed to resupply.

HH’s memory is normally excellent but I think he meant that Jonesville is right on the trail, just take a left after crossing the Winooski River to reach the friendly local store. Johnson is close to the trail, just a mile or so, and an excellent town stop for resupply.

I hiked the LT in July and had no problems finding alcohol resupplies. I only carried an 8 oz bottle and resupplied in Manchester Center (the outfitter sells it by the ounce), Waitsfield (HEET), Jonesville (HEET bought while visiting a friend in Montpelier), and Johnson (at the hardware store).

Yeah, I was thinking of the LT Tavern near Johnson. I got a ride from there into town (not far), and just forgot that I had actually done that and not just been “in” town. Sorry for the mix-up.

Now I know why your name looked familiar, met Bones on top of Madonna, cool.

As for fuel r/s, there’s the hardware store in Johnson, HEET or alcohol at the hardware store in Richmond (none in Jonesville), and not much in Bristol. Deb found some off brand HEET type, but it stunk us out of Starks Nest and she was still getting the soot off her hands Saturday as I left her.
