Every time I have heard this topic come up, I get the feeling that some people wish they arn’t going to make it. That way they don’t feel like they were missing out on anything by starting early.:oh I could be wrong but it don’t seem right.

Ran into Megan H. and her father today. He said Hydro is back on the trail after dropping off, so unless Hydro is restarting later than there is at least one still on the trail.

Some NOBOs started earlier. Mountain Man and Mountain Dew started in late November and are between Erwin and Damascus now.

If a hiker starts in January, then re-starts in March, that doesn’t mean they won’t complete the trail. I don’t understand why some people take such interest in people who get off the trail.

Gee, in the south we call comments like that jealousy and tackiness. Hydro and Cocoon are hiking…she is just continuing her hike.
Suzn
Section hikers technically get off the Trail on a semi-regular schedule. It doesn’t mean they’ve quit their hikes.

What is the big deal, we always say Hike your Own Hike. That’s what they’re doing! Thumbs up to them!

I would like to start on the 1st of Jan some year. Not necessarily to complete a Thru-Hike but to see the trail with some snow on it and no leaves on the trees. I had a Thru-Hike planned for this year with a 1 Apr start. But do to a lot of medical problems starting on 1 Apr is real “if-ee” and then I only have 30 days between major medical appointments and 2 week recovery from expected surgery on 14 March. If I can only hike 30 days and have to get-off and go home for awhile and then come back later in the summer it is you know how I have to "Hike My Own Hike.
I agree “Thumbs up to them” and anyone who does what they are doing.

According to her trailjournal, Bluevist started back at Wesser today. Okay, so some folks take a little time off, what’s the big deal? My son is graduating from law school in May, and I’ll take a week or two off for that, believe me!

Not all thru-hikers have journals, register their hikes or stop and make their intentions known to the people that do the counting. Don’t assume because you haven’t read about them, they aren’t out there.

Jaws sure had some bad things to say about them. Truth is, those who started on Jan 1st all dropped off at some point. Just shows this is a stupid time to start a thru-hiker.
Mountain Man and Dew started in Nov but are only now in Erwin?

Roger why dont you find something to complain about that will hold water. No one else could give a flying rats A@# about completion or how slow other people are going. Hike your own hike dude.

i ran into cocoon today on top of white rocks mtn, and he reported that hellkat has signed all the registers that he has seen so far. there was some frozen precip laying here and there, and it was crampon weather on leconte friday, so winter still has a grippe in the south. but i’ve also got 2 kinds of flowers in the front beds, and the days are getting longer, so the trail will be getting busy again soon. i’ll most likely end up on more side trails, old roads (like how i got up white rocks today - 2 great cleared ridgetop fields-awesome!) and offtrail, so someone else will have to give the up to the minny skinny…

My compliments to ALL the hikers who have been out on the trail this winter. Congrats and “thank you.”
