Alternate route around 4 peaks

Hey everyone.
I’m right now in phoenix taking my first zero day at Jannet and Mike house.(They turned out to be realy cool people).

From what She-ra and other say, the section from lake rosevelt to sunflower is possibly the suckies on the whole trail, so here is the alternate I took which turned out to be realy good.
From the bridge by rosvelt lake You can road walk 18 miles north (You pass by chollah campground where You can actualy get a free shower). That will take You by a big grocery store (biggest on the trail up to now) at mile 261 and a mile an a half later You reach punkin center (which has a library and internet). From there take f.s. 491 left (west) over reno pass . its about 5 miles and 2500 feet of elevation gain, to the pass which is about 5000 feet. from there continue west on the closed jeep road for about 3 miles untill you reach F.S.22 and from there its a couple of miles to highway 87 by sun flower. its a nice and relativly easy hike (in azt standarts) and will save you carrying a heavy backpack over a reportadly realy bad section. Just buy the food in punkin center.

Good luck

For me, it is…
That section sounds like the suckiest section on the AZT. The alternate is cool and has good resupply…

Thanks for the info, Roni. I hiked that section in December, and it did really suck. It is passable, though, for anyone who wants to try it. It’s getting better–brushing crews have been working on it.

The Trail over the Mazatzal Divide north of Sunflower is now in fairly great shape, maybe a mile of brush and blowdowns in there. I just hiked that and it was a great hike. Don’t skip that part!
