thanks bb, i know, i know, cart before the horse. hehehe. I actually am just concerned about if i will be putting the end of my hike on visa and paying for it over 30 years. I should be able to get there fine with cash if work holds up thru 2 more months…fixing houses is a trip, feast or starvation. but i have child support too, so i got to think think think or i get another journey of a year in jail.

good to see ya buttercup

Whatever you do, don’t do this section on a nice Saturday or Sunday. I should have known better, but I ended up on top of Washington at noon on a Saturday in August. Ridiculous crowds of ridiculous people. What could have been a highlight was definitely a lowlight of my hike.

On the bright side, I made it through the Whites without giving any $$ to the AMC by doing several work for stays and stealth camping. Generally, you can find stealth or bootleg sites where you might expect them to be.

Celt, I agree that a stealth site is one that shows no sign of use when you leave it. In the Whites, however, it can be very damaging in many areas just leaving the trail. It is a fragile eviorn. I termed the sites “not so stealthy” because every one was referring to them as stealth sites along the trail, when in fact they were quite heavily used. Given the limited work for stay options or leaving the trail in a pristine fragile alpine zone which by its very nature made true stealth camping nearly impossibe, I chose to camp in the already impacted areas rather than impact new areas. From the Green Mountains through the whites there are WAY, WAY, WaY to many pay to play sites on public land. No hiker should be priced out of a thru hike by use fees on public land! That being said I think that some thru-hikers are their own worst enemies in the whites. Dont expect work for stay, treat the Hut Croos with respect and courtesy and you just might find they will go out of their way to be helpful. The Croos are, after all, outdoor lovers themselves and often former thru hikers as well!
