I want to avoid the throngs of hikers on the southern Appalachian Trail in March in April. If I start at Springer Mountain in mid-February, how cold will the Appalachian Trail be in Georgia and North Carolina? Any other comments on an early start?

In 2009 I started in late Febuary and it was in the single Digit’s before Neel’s Gap.The snow drift’s were half way up my leg’s.In 2006 It snowed 3 or 4 times before Davenport gap.Be prepared for bad weather until late spring.You will have plenty of company in mid febuary.
