I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

What do you guys think?

Probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen on e-bay. I posted a question to the seller and told him if he needed money to get a job.

I laughed and then cried. What a sad sad man.

And the crazy part is, you don’t get what you bid on until 2006!!!

Maybe we could give him gear advice…Heh-heh-heh.
(I wonder if he knows about Trailjournals?!)

Here’s the text if you don’t want to surf over there:

"About fifteen years ago I began planning a thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail. I have since gotten married, learned that working for a non profit organization means the employee does not make a profit, adopted a rescue puppy, and returned to school, in the hopes that I can eventually land a job that will turn a profit. Needless to say, my hiking plans have been put on the back burner. I thought about going on the hike before returning to school, but knew if I didn’t get back in the classroom, I never would. Returning to school has given me the opportunity to combine a thru-hike with my Masters thesis; I am doing an ethnographic study of northbound thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail (sounds neat huh?) I will be leaving from Springer Mountain in mid-March, moving north, interviewing hikers and businesses that support hikers along the way. But as a struggling college student I am looking to raise funds. So, what is up for bid here?
To the winner of this auction, I will provide correspondence, including pictures (once developed) about my progress and experiences in this region of the AT (check the auction title for region covered). Additionally, if the winner is interested, I will provide a copy of my thesis once completed (I’m sure it will be fantastic reading, and a cure for any sleepless night! BUT bear in mind it may not be finished until April 2006 – it has to go through several professors on my committee before it can be pronounced completed). The regions I am selling are:

  1. The beginning – Georgia (this is a shot section – I will be hiking this over Spring Break)

  2. Virginia

  3. Maryland & Pennsylvania

  4. New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts

  5. Vermont & New Hampshire

  6. Maine"

LOL, more power to him! I love seeing someone try creative ways to make his dream a reality! With all the absolute crap available on e-bay 24/7, it’s refreshing to see an oportunity to fund something worthwhile. I hope he makes enough to flip flop. Hike your own hike, and fund it your own way, too!

Nearly as bad as the woman who just sold a walking stick on ebay for $65,000, just because she said it was haunted with the ghost of her dead father. Just goes to show, someone out there will probably buy those miles.

“To the winner of this auction, I will provide correspondence, including pictures (once developed) about my progress and experiences in this region of the AT”–Isn’t this what trailjournals is for??

I fully agree with RenMan98. Looks as if the guy already sold stuff via e-bay and thought he would give this a try. No harm in trying an alternate way to raise some funds for his hike. Plus, there are probably a few people out there who dream of walking the AT but who know that they never will and might think that having this guy provide info, pictures, thesis etc…will give them some kind of link to the trail.

I think a copy of his thesis might be useful. It would be a good toy for my pet rock to play with.
