Android vs. iPhone for GPS/topo maps.

Anyone with experience on this topic?

Thanks

Sorry to say not yet, but I am about to. Just got the Droid (Verizon), so that is what I’ll be using. Also the Latitude app so others can track me. Google Earth has the PCT on it, so I’ll use that as well.

I would be very interested in any tips or tutorials. I start hiking next Monday.

If you are looking for a good Android mapping app, I’ve been using Orux Maps on my Droid for a couple of years. Works great. You can create map sets via a PC and load them onto the device so you have maps even if no cell or data service. GPS tracks of the most trails can be found on-line, and many have waypoints as well. I used it on my 2-year hike of the CT with no problem, even when without cell service for 3-4 days at a time.

Drop me a note if you need more details.

Bear in mind that most major trails are marked well enough that a device like this is a personal preference and not a necessity. A Droid is pretty power hungry so you will need an external battery pack.

Backcountry Navigator is popular for Droid, easy to use, and caches maps as well. Several choices of maps. It can also use Halfmile’s GPS tracks.
